Oh, the pain, indeed.

When Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts took to the airwaves at 2 p.m. on Monday, most long-time listeners already knew what the big topic of conversation would be; as much Mets talk as there was to be had from a rough weekend, and as much as baseball’s COVID-19 outbreak was affecting NYC, the Jets’ weekend trade of Jamal Adams was going to be subject numero uno for Joe & Evan.

And if it wasn’t bad enough, right before the 3 p.m. hour started, Jim from West Harrison called in to ask Joe a question: “Why are you guys always so negative?” when it comes to the Jets.

Wrong time, wrong place, DEFINITELY wrong day, bro, because Joe brought the pain to Jim’s ears.

“Why are we so negative? YOU TELL ME WHY I SHOULD BE POSITIVE?” Joe screamed over the caller, who was trying his best to argue with Benigno and getting nowhere. “Give me one freakin’ reason why I should be positive! What is that reason?”

Jim tried to tell Joe “there’s hope,” but that just made it worse.

“There’s no damn hope! They have inept ownership, a head coach who is brutal, we don’t know if they have a franchise quarterback, we don’t know what Joe Douglas is, they haven’t sniffed the Super Bowl in 52 years, they haven’t made the playoffs in 10 years,” Joe ranted, and as Jim kept trying to make his point, Joe just wasn’t having it.

“No, you can’t – I’m sick and freakin’ tired of guys like you telling me I’m NEGATIVE! WELL WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO BE POSITIVE ABOUT? YOU TELL ME!” Joe screamed as Rick’s call was cut off. “I am sick and tired of phone calls like that. Don’t tell me that I have to be positive as a Jets fan – give me one damn reason why I should be! Why? TELL. ME. WHY?”

It was at this point that the cooler head of Evan Roberts jumped in to re-set the scene.

“This is also, Joe, not the day to make that phone call. Don’t make that call the day after the Jets traded a 24-year-old All-Pro player,” Evan said.

“Oh, it’s wonderful!” Joe mockingly retorted. “What more reasons you want? The worst drafting franchise in the sport. I’m so sick of hearing crap like that bro.”

“Joe, I don’t understand how, a day after they traded away the best player on the team for lottery tickets, how that’s supposed to be a positive thing. Even if you wanted to do this, how can you say it was a good day?” Evan asked, and Joe’s response brought his fandom into perspective.

“All you’ve done is push it back, more excuses to have another bad year, that’s all it is. More excuses to not be any good, whatever it may be,” Joe said. “Oh, they have a young team. Give Joe Douglas a chance. Give Gase more than one year. I’m tired of it! What are we talking about here? Ten years without a playoff appearance? Enough. It’s like we’re talking about the Yankees or the Patriots – I’m supposed to be positive.”
