CAA super-agent Brodie Van Wagenen has emerged as the overwhelming favorite to become the next general manager of the New York Mets.

While a deal has not yet been reached, Van Wagenen is expected to take over the front office for the Mets in what is expected to be a crucial offseason for the club.

Here are five facts about the 44-year-old who, barring any snags in negotiations, should be named the team's general manager next week.

1. He grew up in Southern California before going to Stanford to play baseball.

Van Wagenen was born and raised in Southern California, where he attended Crespi Carmelite High School. He received a baseball scholarship to Stanford University, where he served as the team's starting right fielder for two seasons before graduating with a degree in Communication in 1996.

2. He currently represents several prominent members of the Mets.

In his position at CAA, Van Wagenen' client list includes Yoenis Cespedes, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Todd Frazier, and minor league Tim Tebow. It was Van Wagenen that negotiated Cespedes' four-year, $110 million contract with the team, setting records for highest annual average value ($27.5 million) for an outfielder and any Mets player in franchise history.

3. He was once named to Sports Business Journal's "40 under 40" list.

Back in March 2012, Sports Business Journal named Van Wagenen to its "40 Under 40" list of "the best young talent in sports business." SBJ's profile of Van Wagenen mentioned how he got started in the business side of sports, which was serving as a paid intern for the Chicago Bulls during the late 1990s.

4. He is well respected around baseball.

Van Wagenen is known around Major League Baseball for his professionalism and intelligence, not to mention his love for the sport. However, he has never worked in a baseball operations department before.

5. His father-in-law was the late astronaut Neil Armstrong

Van Wagenen's wife, Molly, is also a former athlete at Stanford University and is the step daughter of the late astronaut Neil Armstrong. In addition, Van Wagenen's father, Jeff Van Wagenen, played professional golf on the European Seniors Tour for almost 10 years.
