Mike Francesa opened Thursday’s show by reacting to the Jets’ hiring of Adam Gase as head coach.

Jets fans have stated mixed opinions about the former Miami Dolphins head coach taking charge of Gang Green. Francesa stated that former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was clearly the preferred choice of the fan base.

“Any choice other than McCarthy was going to be greeted the way it’s going to be greeted,” Francesa said. “Gase is going to be the head coach – he has been offered the job, he has accepted the job. They just haven’t made the announcement.

“I know people who worked very closely with him there (in Miami) and what they thought of him. They thought he was a good coach. They also thought he could be a jerk at times and he was very hard to get along with. That was his reputation. He had a very big opinion of himself, needed to mature, stuff like that.”

Francesa offered an optimistic take on Gase’s coaching attributes.

“I’ve always felt myself and I told you this, that I thought he had a lot of good qualities as a coach. I’ve seen good things from him as a coach. I’ve also seen some things that were a little puzzling at times – but that’s part of being a young coach.”

Gase began his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant coach at Michigan State under Nick Saban in the late 1990s and then followed Saban to LSU, where he was a graduate assistant and recruiting assistant.

He has served as an assistant coach for the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears before being hired as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. In three seasons with Miami, he went 23-25, reaching the playoffs in 2016.
