Van Wagenen Says No Contract Proposals Yet For DeGrom

'Would Love To Try And Keep Him'

New Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen has a lot of work ahead of him as he makes the switch from agent to the front office.

One of those decisions that will need to be made is whether or not the Mets will give their ace Jacob deGrom a contract extension. Van Wagenen is at the GM meetings and was asked about the potential of that happening.

"I've remained steadfast there that I think he's tremendous and would love to try to keep him if it's possible," Van Wagenen said to reporters Thursday, according to SNY. "We'll explore that in the coming weeks. Outside of just an expression of interest, which has been consistent. We have not gone down to the point where we'd be exchanging proposales."

Van Wagenen said earlier this week that the Mets haven't ruled anything out, including a potential trade of deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. That comment was somewhat taken out of context by many as the new GM was speaking in a more general sense. He clarified those comments.

"I think Jacob and Noah have been and will continue to be really important pieces in this organization," Van Wagenen said. "I think my comments were to the same point that I would characterize all of our roster right now. We're going to continue to look for ways to improve the club. I love our starting pitching, I love our rotation right now."

Being in New York, everything Van Wagenen says is going to be looked at with a close eye. Just a week into the job, it looks like the ex-agent is going to have to get used to clarifying some of his comments.
