After reports that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was looking to trademark the nickname “Tom Terrific,” Mets fans were up in arms over the gunslinger wanting to claim the name bestowed upon Mets Hall of Famer Tom Seaver.

Brady offered an explanation Thursday for why he wanted to take ownership of the nickname.

“I was trying to do something because I don’t actually like the nickname and some people wanted to use it," he told reporters. "I was trying to keep people from using it and then it got spun around to something different than what it was.

Some on Twitter didn't believe Brady's excuse.

Other fans are hoping that since Brady doesn’t want the name used in association with him, he will give the trademark to the Seaver family instead.

There is a group of fans, however, that recognizes that neither should own the name, as it was given to them by the media.
