Sam Darnold Misses Practice With Foot Injury, Won't Play Sunday

November 07, 2018 - 2:10 pm

Much has been made about the recent struggles of Sam Darnold. The rookie QB leads the league with 14 interceptions on the season, including four in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins.

The Jets will look to avoid losing their fourth game in a row when they face the Buffalo Bills this coming Sunday. They will have to do so without Darnold, but not because he is being benched for poor play. The third overall pick has picked up his first injury since his junior year of high school.

Darnold did not take part in practice on Wednesday. Instead, he looked on from the sidelines with a boot on his right leg. According to a source of WFAN's Brian Costello, the injury will cause him to miss Sunday's game. The Jets insisted on Wednesday afternoon that his status for the game was still up in the air, but Todd Bowles says Davis Webb could start in Darnold's place if he is unavailable.

There is a lot of uncertainty here, and the true extent of the 21-year-old's strain is unknown, but it's possible he could miss time after the team's bye in Week 11. Week 12 sees the Jets welcome the New England Patriots to MetLife Stadium.

Todd Bowles confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that the injury was a foot strain, and that the QB was being listed as day-to-day.

The Jets may choose to be cautious with Darnold for the rest of the season, even if his ailment is something minor. At 3-6 the team does not have much hope left of reaching the playoffs.
