Report: Cashman Has Had Internal Discussions About Trading For Arenado

January 18, 2019 - 2:00 pm

A lot of Yankees fans seem to be holding their breath for Manny Machado, but it appears as if general manager Brian Cashman may have his eyes set on a different prize.

Cashman has internally discussed the possibility of attempting to put together a trade for Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado, according to SNY's Andy Martino.

Martino went on to say that Cashman and Rockies GM Jeff Bridich have likely already touched base this offseason, but neither GM has confirmed this.

Arenado and the Rockies are currently headed to an arbitration hearing, where the superstar third baseman is asking for $30 million in his final year before becoming a free agent, while Colorado is offering $24 million.

The Rockies have publicly stated their desire to sign the face of the franchise to a long-term deal. However, if the two sides are unable to come to an agreement soon, the team could look to trade Arenado before the season starts while they can still receive a large haul for the 27-year-old.

Back in December, WFAN's Sweeny Murti suggested the Yankees could look toward a trade for Arenado as a fallback plan in case they fail in their pursuit of Machado or Bryce Harper.

Murti proposed a trade centered around Miguel Andujar, a talented, young player who would immediately replace Arenado at third base in Colorado.

New York would likely talk an extension with Arenado if a trade to the Bronx were to take place.

Through his first six years in Major League Baseball, Arenado has won six Gold Glove Awards and four Silver Slugger Awards while making the All-Star Game in each of the last four seasons. In addition, he has led the National League in home runs three times while leading the NL in RBIs twice.

Arenado hit .297/.374/.561 with 38 home runs and 110 RBIs in 156 games this past season.
