Giants legend Phil Simms joined "Joe and Evan" on Thursday for the first time since the start of this young NFL season.

Simms and the guys touched on quite a few of the hot-button topics that are in the news around the league.

Simms had some praise for Sam Darnold ahead of Thursday night's game between the Jets and Browns.

"If you're a Jets fan, you gotta watch that game and go 'we got a quarterback,'" said Simms. "We got a guy that looks like he can make plays!"

There wasn't much that the 14-year veteran could praise about the Giants. Everyone knows the offensive line has struggled, so Joe and Evan also asked Phil what he thought about Eli Manning's performances so far this season.

The conversation then shifted away from the local teams and to the drama happening in New England and Pittsburgh.

"Friction I think is great for a football team," said Simms. "But when you have what's going on in Pittsburgh, then it becomes the talk of the locker room. ... It's a distraction."

Simms also spoke about Ryan Fitzpatrick's electric start in Tampa Bay. Simms is expecting another big game from the 35-year-old former Jets QB when he plays those same Steelers this weekend.

Then finally there was time for a bit of nostalgia about the infamous "tough love" coaching methods of Simms' former coach Bill Parcells.

"There's no coach ever like him in history," said Simms. "When he yelled at you, you were allowed to yell back at him!"
