The Yankees welcomed back one key player Friday but lost another for a while.

The Bombers announced that first baseman Luke Voit has been reinstated after spending the past month on the injured list with a sports hernia.

But the Yankees placed third baseman Gio Urshela on the 10-day IL with a left groin injury, retroactive to Thursday. Urshela left Wednesday's game in Seattle early after experiencing tightness in his groin while running out a second-inning infield hit. He remained in the game until the fifth inning.

"I think Sunday in Boston would be the first day he's eligible (to return), and I'm looking at it as like that's a real possibility," Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters. "Feels like something that's probably a few days, but with an off day yesterday and an off day coming ... probably the best thing for him and for us to do this now and make sure this doesn't become a lingering issue."

Urshela is the 29th Yankee to land on the IL this season, breaking the 2016 Dodgers' record of 28.

Urshela has been a surprising bright spot for the Yankees this season. Injuries to numerous players forced Urshela, acquired in a trade last August with the Blue Jays, into the lineup. Now he finds himself among the 16 Yankees currently on the IL.

In 114 games this season, Urshela has batted .331 with 18 home runs and 67 RBIs.

In 94 games, Voit is hitting .278 with 19 homers and 54 RBIs.

The Yankees (88-47) open a three-game home series against the Oakland A's on Friday night.
