Steve Phillips has been around the block. He knows what it’s like to be a general manager in Major League Baseball, and he knows what it’s like to be a general manager for the New York Mets.

On Monday, the Mets took the unorthodox step of hiring an agent to be their GM. Brodie Van Wagenen is the new man in the job.

Phillips, who is currently an MLB analyst for TSN, joined Carlin, Maggie & Bart on Thursday to talk about Van Wagenen’s transition from agent to GM. The former Mets GM believes the current Mets GM has a “significant learning curve” ahead of him.

“The notion that being an agent is the experience necessary to be a general manager is far-fetched,” said Phillips to CMB. “It’s far different. It doesn’t mean he can’t do it. It doesn’t mean he’s not going to be able to do it … but understand that this is going to be a significant learning curve for him cause it’s a different way of thinking when you’re an agent compared to when you’re a general manager.”

Van Wagenen’s lack of experience is concerning, but Phillips added that he was more assured about the situation now that Omar Minaya is set to become a top adviser for the Mets.

“It makes me feel better with Omar Minaya next to him … He was my assistant. I love him. He’s an ideas guy. He’s got experience … so they’ve got some people around him.”
