Jets Name Sam Darnold Starting Quarterback For Week 1

In a move that surprised absolutely nobody, Jets coach Todd Bowles named rookie Sam Darnold as his starting quarterback Monday.

"He’s earned that right to start," Bowles told reporters. "So we’re going to start him. He just needs to keep getting better.

“We’re not starting him because he’s a rookie and he’s not ready. We’re starting him because he gives us a chance to win the games.”

Darnold's role came into focus last week when the Jets traded Teddy Bridgewater to the New Orleans Saints, but following the trade and the team's preseason finale, Bowles remained tight-lipped about his quarterback situation.

The only other QB on the 53-man roster is 39-year-old Josh McCown, but he didn't see any snaps until the fourth preseason game, a sign that he was likely third in the running behind Darnold and Bridgewater for much of  training camp and the preseason.

The Jets selected Darnold with the third overall pick in April's draft. When the Jets play at Detroit on Sept. 10, the 21-year-old will become the youngest quarterback in NFL history to start a season opener.

In the preseason, McCown completed 29 of 45 passes (64.4 percent) for for 244 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
