Report: Darnold Has 'Very Fair Shot' To Win Jets' Starting QB Job

August 06, 2018 - 9:24 am

Don't be surprised if Sam Darnold lines up under center for the Jets in Week 1.

Citing multiple sources Monday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the rookie "has a very fair shot" of winning the starting quarterback job for the regular season opener Sept. 10 at Detroit.

Schefter's report, however, contradicted itself some by saying Darnold is probably "a year away." But if he keeps progressing and has a strong preseason, the USC product could win the job, according to the report.

The Jets selected Darnold with the third overall pick in April's draft. The 21-year-old signal-caller missed the first three days of training camp in a contract dispute, but in just a week, he has positioned himself to potentially beat out veterans Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater.

Darnold looked comfortable in Saturday night's Green and White scrimmage at Rutgers University, completing 9 of 11 passes for 89 yards with no interceptions.
