Khalil Mack

Report: Jets Made Significant Offer To Raiders For Khalil Mack

October 25, 2018 - 5:42 pm

The Jets’ defense has had an inconsistent first half of the season. They played well by holding the Lions and Broncos to 17 and 16 points, respectively, but this past Sunday they were poor, as they gave up 42 points to the Vikings at home.

There were rumors this summer that the Jets wanted to boost their defensive unit by trading for Khalil Mack, but no move materialized and Mack was eventually dealt to the Bears.

Apparently those were more than just rumors. The Jets did want Mack. According to the New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta, they wanted him enough to make the Raiders a significant trade offer before the linebacker was moved to Chicago.

New York reportedly offered its 2019 first-round pick, its 2020 second-round pick and “additional compensation” to Oakland in a bid to acquire Mack. The Raiders realized they could get a bigger package from the Bears and wanted to trade Mack out of the conference anyway, so the Jets "were never given the chance" to increase their offer. However, according to Mehta, they were willing to give up even more for the 27-year-old's services.

On Sept. 1, Oakland traded Mack, a 2020 second-round pick and a 2020 conditional fifth-round pick for the Bears' 2019 and 2020 first-round picks, 2020 third-round pick and 2019 sixth-round pick. He then signed a six-year, $141 million extension that made him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

Mack is a superstar. His addition might have eliminated some of the inconsistency that the Jets’ defense is struggling from, but two first-round picks were quite the price to pay for any single player.
