August 15, 2018 - 1:31 pm

The brother-in-law of Mike Trout died Wednesday morning, the Los Angeles Angels star and team said.

Aaron Cox was a prospect in the Angels organization until he retired last week at the age of 24. Cox was born in Vineland, New Jersey, and attended Millville High School in Cumberland County, also Trout's alma mater. Trout is married to Cox's sister, Jessica.

A cause of death has not been given.

"Early this morning our families lost a phenomenal human being," Trout and Jessica said in a statement. "Aaron Cox was a tremendous son, brother, and brother-in-law. He had a deep love for his family, and a passionate dedication and commitment to his friends. As our families grieve together, we will also celebrate the memories, the laughter and the love we each shared with Aaron."

After attending Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, Cox was selected in the 19th round of the 2015 MLB draft by the Angels. Over parts of three minor-league seasons, Cox was 7-3 with a 3.64 ERA over 68 appearances, all in relief.

“The Angels organization is saddened to hear of the passing of Aaron Cox, a member of the Angels family since 2015,” the team said in a statement. “We are deeply heartbroken and shocked by this tragic loss. Our heartfelt prayers and condolences to his family and friends. Aaron will always have a special place in the hearts of those within the organization.”

Cox did not mention his retirement from baseball on Twitter, but did post an inspiration quote: "Sometimes you have to let go of the picture of what you thought life would be like and learn to find joy in the story you are actually living."
