Mike Mussina’s election to the Baseball Hall of Fame has been a bit controversial.

There was plenty of debate over whether Mussina deserved to be in The Hall at all. When the returns came back and it was revealed that Mussina had barely reached the threshold of appearing on 75 percent of the necessary ballots, the conversation shifted to which team he would represent in Cooperstown.

The newly enshrined pitcher split his career between the Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles, and on Friday he announced that he would not choose one over the other. His Hall of Fame cap won’t have a team’s logo on it.

“Both the Yankees and the Orioles were instrumental in my reaching Cooperstown,” Mussina said. “I am proud to have played for these great organizations, in front of the tremendous fans in Baltimore and New York, and I am honored to have the opportunity to represent them both in the Hall of Fame.”

Mussina went 270-153 over the entirety of his 18-year career. In his 10 years in Baltimore he went 147-81 with a 3.53 ERA. He signed with the Yankees after the 2000 season and proceeded to go 123-72 with a 3.88 ERA during his eight years in the Bronx.

The late Roy Halladay will also have no logo on his hat when his bust heads to the Hall of Fame alongside Mussina’s. Halladay was a Toronto Blue Jay for the first 12 years of his career before joining the Philadelphia Phillies for the last four.

Still, the Yankees will have one notable new representation in the Hall of Fame. Mariano Rivera highlights the Class of 2019 as he became the first baseball player to ever be unanimously selected to The Hall.

There isn't much of a competitive rivalry between the two teams anymore, but the Yankees and Orioles used to really butt heads. Mussina was smart to choose the safe option that shouldn't really offend either fanbase.
