The New York Mets have put up a touching tribute to one of New York sports’ unsung heroes.

SNY tweeted a photo on Tuesday morning showcasing that, as part of their use of cardboard cutouts to fill seats at Citi Field, the Mets have placed a cutout of Anthony Causi in the photographers’ well.

Causi, a long-time New York Post photographer, passed away in April after a battle with coronavirus. He had worked for the Post for a quarter-century and took many iconic photos – including his most popular, a legendary shot of Mariano Rivera departing the Yankees bullpen taken from behind The Sandman as he entered the field.

Causi’s passing drew many tributes from past and present New York athletes, coaches, media, and team employees, including this one from Mets COO Jeff Wilpon.

“He was a charismatic photographer who brought fans closer to the action with his breathtaking images of the Mets,” Wilpon said in a statement. “More importantly, he was a friend to so many of us through his numerous spring trainings in Port St. Lucie as well as being a fixture at Citi Field.”
