Mets GM Van Wagenen Says He's Been In Touch With A.J. Pollock's Agent

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Add free agent center fielder A.J. Pollock to the list of players new Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen is interested in.

Van Wagenen revealed in an interview Tuesday that he has been in touch with Pollock's agent.

"A.J. fits us really well. He's a guy that we have been in touch with his agent the way we have many of the free agents out there," the new Mets GM told MLB Network Radio. "And it's a little unclear at this point where those conversations go, but I will continue to have dialogue with his agent."

Pollock, who turns 31 on Wednesday, hit .257 with 21 home runs and 65 RBIs in 113 games this past season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Over his seven-year career, he has a .281 batting average with 74 homers and 264 RBIs. Pollock was an All-Star in 2015, when he hit .315 with 20 homers and 76 RBIs.

Injuries, however, have plagued his career -- he's only played more than 137 games once. Pollock missed a month and a half in 2018 with a broken thumb. A groin injury limited him to just 112 games the year before. And he missed all but 12 games in 2016 due to a broken elbow.

In introducing the newly acquired Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz on Tuesday, Van Wagenen said he plans to make additional moves. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Fox Sports reported that the Mets are also aggressively pursuing a trade for All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto.

Miami is reportedly asking for a controllable major league asset in the deal, which would most likely means the Mets would have to part ways with shortstop Amed Rosario, outfielder Michael Conforto or outfielder Brandon Nimmo.
