The Knicks only held brief, preliminary trade talks with the New Orleans Pelicans about Anthony Davis and never made a formal offer for the six-time All-Star big man in the latest round of trade talks, a report says.

Listen to your team news NOW.

According to the New York Post's Marc Berman, whose report cited an unnamed NBA official, the Knicks apparently believed they could not match the Pelicans' demands for Davis and then backed off.

On Saturday, New Orleans dealt Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers for for point guard Lonzo Ball, forward Brandon Ingram, shooting guard Josh Hart and three first-round draft choices.

The Knicks were reportedly included on Davis' short list of desired destinations. But SNY reported last week that the Knicks were reluctant to give up too many young players or draft picks in a deal.

Davis requested a trade from the Pelicans in January, just days before the NBA trade deadline, and the Knicks were reportedly preparing then to make an offer for him.

The Pelicans elected to hold on to Davis at the deadline. They have since hired David Griffin as executive vice president of basketball operations, who reopened trade talks a couple of weeks ago after unsuccessfully trying to convince Davis to change his mind.

The Knicks will now focus largely on free agency for veteran upgrades. They have enough salary-cap space to sign two max-level free agents. The top players available who will or could become free agents if they don't exercise their player options are Golden State's Kevin Durant, Toronto's Kawhi Leonard, Boston's Kyrie Irving, Philadelphia's Jimmy Butler, Charlotte's Kemba Walker and Golden State's Klay Thompson. The Knicks are reportedly still interested in Durant despite the 10-time All-Star rupturing his Achilles tendon, which could sideline him all of next season.
