The Jets signed veteran safety J.J. Wilcox on Thursday after reportedly learning Rontez Miles will miss significant time with a knee injury.

Wilcox appeared to be close to signing with the San Francisco 49ers earlier this week, but "got stage fright," a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Another source told Schefter that Wilcox wanted to play for Jets coach Todd Bowles.

Miles, known more for his contributions on special teams, will undergo surgery on a torn meniscus, WFAN's Brian Costello confirmed. The Jets are hoping Miles can return by midseason.

Wilcox, 28, played in 12 games for the Steelers last season, registering 12 tackles and an interception. He is expected to fill Miles' role on special teams as well as a reserve safety.

The 6-foot 212-pound defensive back was a third-round pick by the Cowboys in 2013. In four seasons in Dallas, he played in 58 games (38 starts) and had 212 tackles, five interceptions, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

The Jets made room on the roster for Wilcox by waiving linebacker Freddie Bishop.
