It would be an understatement to say that Le’Veon Bell is excited for the new season.

Listen to your team news NOW.

Bell didn’t play last year as he opted to sit out instead of signing onto the franchise tag that the Steelers placed on him. The Jets signed him as a free agent this spring, and now he’s just a few days away from suiting up for his new team and finally getting back into a real NFL game.

The Jets new running back spoke to the media Wednesday ahead of Week 1 about how he told Adam Gase not to hold him back, despite his long layoff from the sport.

Bell didn’t play in any of the team’s preseason contests. Gase explained that by saying that the goal was to increase Bell’s reps and “get him as game-ready as possible because he’s not really going to know until we get in a real game.”

It seems unlikely that Bell will be asked to carry the ball 50 times, but he should still be fresh and ready for his fair share of involvement against Buffalo.

Earlier on Wednesday, Gase was asked during his press conference if he planned to limit Bell’s workload. The Jets coach told reporters that he would “see how the game goes,” but he also mentioned Bell’s “don’t hold me back” message.

Bell certainly carried a heavy workload in 2017, his last year playing for the Steelers. Back then, he had a career-high 321 rushes for 1291 yards, while also managing 85 receptions out of the backfield. His numbers this year could creep up to something similar, once he has shown that he really is at full fitness.

Despite all the attention on his personal return to the field, Bell emphasized that he really doesn’t care how much he gets the ball. He just wants the team to win.

“I want to go out there, make sure I'm doing all the small things right and do enough for us to win the game … that’s all that matters.”
