Compared to other young quarterbacks he's been around throughout his career, Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan says he's been "exceptionally impressed" with rookie Sam Darnold.

"They've thrown everything at him, in terms of the offense," Maccagnan told WFAN's "Boomer & Gio" on Monday morning from training camp in Florham Park, New Jersey. "He's handled it, he's moved on, and he's done well with it. But every day he goes out there, he gets a little better."

Darnold, the third overall pick in this year's draft, is battling 39-year-old journeyman Josh McCown and ex-Viking Teddy Bridgewater for the starting job. Earlier this month, ESPN reported the Jets are open to trading Bridgewater

"There's nothing to stop us from keeping three (quarterbacks)," he said. "There's nothing to stop us from keeping two."

Maccagnan is entering his fourth season as the Jets' GM. After going 10-6 and winning NFL Executive of the Year in his first season, the Jets stumbled to back-to-back 5-11 finishes.

The Jets extended the contracts of both Maccgnan and coach Todd Bowles after last season. Despite that, is Maccagnan feeling the pressure to win this year -- and could that be impacting his decisions?

"As a general manager, you can't look at sort of your personal situation," he said. "You have to look at what you think is in the best interest of the organization. You really have to operate at 35,000-foot level because you're making decisions that's trying to set the team up for success not only immediately but also down the road."
