The New York Jets could be close to adding a key piece to their defense.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets believe they will sign cornerback Logan Ryan to a one-year deal.

Per Brian Costello of The New York Post, discussions are ongoing but no formal offer has been made.

Ryan, 29, is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots and spent last year with the Tennessee Titans and picked off Tom Brady to seal their AFC Divisional Round win.

He finished the regular season with 18 passes defensed, 4.5 sacks, four interceptions, eight quarterback hits and 113 tackles.

Ryan spent the last three years with the Titans, but said last week that they never offered him a contract to return. The cornerback was looking for a deal that would pay him $10 million in 2020.

The Jets have about $14 million in cap space (after June 1), but general manager Joe Douglas has been more of a bargain shopper this offseason.

The Jets could certainly use Ryan in a secondary that is lacking outside of the safety position.

Signing with the Jets would also be a homecoming for Ryan, who is a New Jersey native – growing up in Berlin, NJ in Camden County and playing college at Rutgers.

Douglas has remained busy since the NFL Draft in late April. He signed veteran running back Frank Gore to a one-year deal last week and certainly is not finished making any upgrades to the roster.
