The Islanders paid a hefty price to make a big splash before the trade deadline Monday, reportedly acquiring center Jean-Gabriel Pageau from the Ottawa Senators.

The Isles are sending their first- and second-round draft picks this year to Ottawa in the deal. According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the first-round pick would be pushed back to 2021 in the unlikely scenario that New York draws a top-three selection in the draft lottery. The Islanders would also surrender a third-round pick in 2022 if they win the Stanley Cup this year, according to Dreger.

"Ottawa. Couldn’t be more greateful for everything. I am out of word," Pageau posted on social media. "From the bottom of my heart. Thank you to all the organization, teammates, trainers, coaches and (especially) fans who made this journey so special. My wife and I are now so excited to join (the Islanders).

Pageau, 27, is enjoying a career season, registering 24 goals and 16 assists in 60 games. He's already set a career high in goals and needs just three points to match his career best of 43. Pageau ranks 10th in the league this season with a 17.8 shooting percentage.

Over his career, the Ottawa native has skated in 428 games and has 87 goals and 95 assists for 182 points.

Pageau agreed to a six-year extension shortly after the trade was made official. The 5-foot-10, 184-pound forward was a fourth-round pick by the Senators in 2011.

After starting the season by going 16-3-2, the Islanders have cooled off considerably. At 35-20-6, they are currently in position for a wild-card spot, but only two points separate them and the Columbus Blue Jackets, the top team on the outside looking in.

New York ranks 22nd in the NHL in team offense, averaging 2.84 goals per game.
