WFAN's Joe Benigno has been calling for the firing of Jets coach Todd Bowles for years. Even as it became fairly apparent in recent weeks that this season would be Bowles' last with Gang Green, Benigno repeatedly said he was nervous the Jets would still retain him.

On Sunday night, Benigno finally got his wish when Bowles was indeed fired. But calling in to WFAN during his vacation Monday morning, Benigno wasn't exactly jubilant.

"My big concern now is, are they going to blow it again?" Benigno told his radio partner, Evan Roberts. "I mean, I've got to tell you, I've got no confidence they're going to get it (the coaching hire) right this time. I just don't. I mean, why should I, bro?"

Benigno, a lifelong Jets fan, wants a proven, experienced head coach -- Mike McCarthy and Jim Harbaugh top his wish list.

If neither of them are available, he said former Colts and Lions coach Jim Caldwell wouldn't be a bad choice.

"I don't think Jim Caldwell is the worst freakin' hire, bro," Benigno said. "He's not sexy at all, but the guy's got a winning record.

"He took the Lions to the playoffs twice. He took the Colts to the Super Bowl -- he had that 14-2 the year that they lost to the Saints and beat the Jets. ... He was the assistant head coach to (Tony) Dungy on their (the Colts') Super Bowl team in '06. He was the offensive coordinator to (John) Harbaugh on the Ravens' Super Bowl team in 2012. He's 12 games over .500.

"I'm not saying I'm running to get Jim Caldwell. What I'm saying is, before you sell me Adam Gase, before you sell me any first-time guy that's out there, unless Mike Tomlin suddenly gets fired today ... then I think Caldwell is not bad."
