NEW YORK (WFAN) -- J.A. Happ signed a contract with the Yankees earlier this week. He wouldn't be opposed to Manny Machado doing the same.

Talking to WFAN's Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts on Thursday, the left-handed starting pitcher was asked about the possibility of the Bombers signing Machado, one of the prized free agents this offseason.

"Obviously, you'd welcome that, right?" Happ said. "I mean, I don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves, but yeah, obviously you add that bat to the lineup, that defense to the lineup, that puts you in a nice spot. So it would nice to not face him."

Happ, meanwhile, likes what he sees in the Yankees' rotation, which has Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia returning and former Mariner James Paxton joining the mix.

"I feel really good about it," said Happ, who went 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA after the Yankees traded for him in July. "I feel like every day we're going to feel good about who's out there, and that's a fun place to be. And at the same time every day you feel good about the offense that's rolling out there, too, to support you. And that's a good combination to have."

Happ said he was "open-minded" entering free agency but is excited about returning to the Bronx.

"I never forgot in the back of my mind how I felt (playing for the Yankees) and what I liked about it," he said. "And in the end, I felt like it was the best combination of everything when I put everything together. And just excited to have the chance to win, and that was a big driver."
