Report: McCarthy-Jets Talks Collapsed Over Staffing Issues, Too

Gang Green Went With Adam Gase

A lot of people were surprised when the New York Jets went with Adam Gase over Mike McCarthy as their new head coach. Well, now we have a little more clarity to the situation and why the Jets and McCarthy didn't mesh.

According to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, the ex-Packers coach and the Jets front office talks broke off over staffing issues. When the Jets asked McCarthy for a list of assistant coaches he was considering for his staff, he began to have reservations about the job, although he ultimately did provide the list, the report said.

McCarthy also apparently had concerns with the structure and composition of the team's front office.

McCarthy was judicious in his pursuit of a new gig knowing he will still receive the $9 million he is owed next season by the Packers. He'll enjoy some family time in 2019 before trying to return to the head coaching ranks next offseason.

The Jets went with Gase, the former Dolphins head coach, to run the show and are reportedly close to hiring ex-interim Browns head coach Gregg Williams to become their new defensive coordinator.

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule also reportedly had differences with the Jets about wanting his own staff and removed himself from consideration.
