Mike Francesa opened Wednesday’s show with his thoughts on the Odell Beckham Jr. trade.

“I did not expect Beckham to get traded,” Francesa said. “Because when he got that contract, when they gave him that contract – which I was dead-set against – I just felt at that point, odds on having the team accept the dead money that they’d have to accept and find compensation and find two teams that can match up in every way – is so unlikely that I just don’t expect him to get traded. That’s the biggest reason.”

The Giants are receiving the Browns' first-round pick this year (17th overall), a third-round selection (95th overall) and safety Jabrill Peppers, who was a first-round pick in 2017 in exchange for Beckham.

Giants Trade Odell Beckham Jr. To Browns

Francesa criticized the Giants for their handling of Beckham’s controversies and for appeasing the star receiver.

“You what my take’s gonna be,” Francesa said. “You know that I haven’t been a Beckham guy from the beginning. I’ve felt that the Giants have mishandled this from jump street. I’ve felt that from the Carolina game where they didn’t discipline him, they’ve ruined everything. I thought they ruined the team, they ruined the discipline on the team, they sent the wrong message, they let him get off on the wrong foot and everything snowballed after that. Five years later, you have a player who is extremely talented, that people are bent over for and just done everything to accommodate and all they’ve done is lost and they’ve given up who they are.”

The Giants signed Beckham to a five-year contract worth $90 million plus incentives last August. In 12 games in 2018, Beckham recorded 77 receptions for 1,052 yards and six touchdowns.

Trading Beckham at this point of his contract will cost the Giants in dead money. They'll have to eat $16 million against the salary cap this season, but will gain $5 million in cap room.
