It’s not often that the Jets and the Patriots make a deal with each other, which is why Tuesday’s reported Demaryius Thomas trade was such a shocker.

Listen to your team news NOW.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets have acquired the 31-year-old wide receiver from New England before he ever even played a real game for the Patriots. New York is apparently sending a sixth-round pick up to Foxborough in exchange for Thomas.

Mike Francesa was also surprised by the news when it broke during ‘Mike’s On’ on Tuesday afternoon. Francesa pointed out that the deal is just further proof that the mighty Patriots don’t fear the Jets whatsoever.

“The Patriots are trading Demaryius Thomas in the division to the Jets, which shows you that the Pats have not the least bit of respect for the Jets,” Francesa said on WFAN. “That they would trade in the division, and trade Demaryius Thomas to the Jets, shows you they have no worry about the Jets.”

The Patriots-Jets rivalry has been incredibly one-sided since the turn of the century, which coincided with Bill Belichick’s arrival in New England after an early resignation as Jets coach. The Pats are 29-11 in both regular season and postseason games against New York since 2000. They’ve also won six Super Bowls in that time, while the Jets have won none.

If the Patriots win the AFC East again this year it will be the eleventh consecutive season they’ve done so. The Jets last won the division in 2002, when Tom Brady played his sophomore season in the NFL.

Thomas also isn't the player he used to be. 2018 was a down year for him even before a torn achilles ended his season in December.

There had been optimism before the season that the Jets could be contenders in the AFC East this year, but Francesa points out that this trade shows that Belichick obviously doesn’t believe Adam Gase’s team are really a serious threat.

“Why would you ever trade in your division to a team that you’re worried about? So, it shows you that the Pats have such utter disdain for the teams in their division … Demaryius Thomas gets traded for a sixth-round pick to the Jets, so basically that’s Belichick saying ‘I’m not worried about the Jets. Before I even play them, I’ll trade them a player.’ That’s unbelievable.”
