Throwing a game away to a division rival is not the way you want to start a new season, but that’s exactly what the Jets did on Sunday.

Listen to your team news NOW.

Adam Gase’s team led the Bills 16-3 after three quarters of play. In the fourth quarter, the Jets completely fell apart as Buffalo scored two late touchdowns to win 17-16 and ruin the opening day of the season at MetLife Stadium.

Even for the Jets, it was an embarrassing loss. WFAN’s Mike Francesa called it a “disaster” during a passionate rant Monday about the Week 1 debacle in New Jersey.

“This was not a bad loss for the Jets, this was an absolute disaster,” said Francesa. “This is a game, at home against a team, if you’re going anywhere you have to beat, and a quarterback who played so badly in (Josh) Allen, that he had people longing for (Nathan) Peterman in the first half … do you know how hard it is to lose a game at home when you’re +4 or more in turnovers? It’s virtually impossible.”

The Jets haven’t made the playoffs since 2010, but there was optimism abound for Gase’s first season on the job and for Sam Darnold’s sophomore campaign. That optimism, at least outside of the Jets’ locker room, has dissipated after just one game.

Sunday’s loss is especially hurtful as the team’s schedule gets much harder now. Up next for New York will be the similarly-disappointing Browns, before clashes with the Patriots, Eagles, Cowboys and then the Patriots again.

Francesa listed off some more of the Jets’ concerns before laughing at the state of the team’s kicking game, which made the wrong sort of difference in the one-point defeat.

“The things that we talked about that would haunt the Jets, haunted the Jets. Suspect corner play? Bingo. Offensive line: not good, worse than that. No kicker. What made the Jets think that they had a kicker? They took a guy from Minnesota, who has been haunted by bad kicking more than probably any team in this league. They cut this guy because he couldn’t make a kick in preseason. They even gave him a scrimmage to try and keep his job, and he went 0-4 in the scrimmage!”

The Jets will reportedly hold kicking try-outs on Tuesday in the aftermath of Kaare Vedvik’s struggles on Sunday afternoon. Vedvik missed an extra point and a 45-yard field goal in what was his NFL debut.
