Mets Sign Outfielder Rajai Davis To Minor-League Deal

Veteran Gives Mets OF Depth, Speed

New York (WFAN) - The Mets signed veteran outfielder Rajai Davis to a minor-league deal Monday with an invitation to Spring Training.

The 38-year-old has been in the big leagues 13 seasons, and is best known for his speed and base-stealing ability. Davis has stolen 415 bases in his career, which is third amongst active players, behind only Jose Reyes (517) and Ichiro Suzuki (509). Davis stole 21 bases in 28 attempts last season with the Indians.

While Davis is coming off possibly his worst season, he gives the Mets an insurance option in the outfield. He gives them a strong defensive center fielder, who can also come in games late not just for defense, but as a pinch-runner. That is if he ends up making it to Queens.

It's a quality veteran addition to a team that could use a backup to Juan Lagares, considering his injury history the past few seasons.

Davis also has playoff experience, and he may be rememered best for his clutch game-tying, three-run homer for the Indians off Aroldis Chapman in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.
