Mets Places Yoenis Cespedes On 10-Day Disabled List

May 16, 2018 - 12:22 pm

The Mets placed Yoenis Cespedes on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right hip flexor.

The outfielder suffered the injury May 6 against the Colorado Rockies. An MRI Tuesday revealed the strain.

General manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday the injury had not improved in recent days and suggested a stint on the DL might be in store. Cespedes was placed on the disabled list retroactive to Monday.

“The decision was pretty clear that we needed to get him on the DL, and get him back to where he needs to be,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Wednesday morning.

While Cespedes is eligible to return as soon as May 24, Callaway said "nobody can predict" when the slugger might be back in the lineup.

In 37 games this season, Cespedes, who has battled several leg injuries the past couple of seasons, is batting .255 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs.

The Mets have recalled infielder Phillip Evans and is in the lineup at left field for Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
