Report: Jets Reach Deal With Gregg Williams To Become Defensive Coordinator

Williams Took Over As Interim Browns Head Coach This Season

Now that the Jets have new head coach Adam Gase introduced, it's now time to find his coaching staff. It looks like Gregg Williams will be the next man up. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Jets have reached a deal with Williams to become their defensive coordinator.

Williams will join the Jets after taking over as the Browns interim head coach this season. Williams started the season as the defensive coordinator, but took over as interim head coach when the Browns fired Hue Jackson. The Browns went 5-3 under Williams and were in the playoff conversation in the month of December.

Gase could not confirm the Williams hire when he joined Mike Francesa on WFAN Tuesday, since the deal is not official. Here's what he said though about what he wants in his defensive coordinator.

"That's the whole kind of purpose looking for a defensive coordinator with not only head coaching experience, but obviously if they have head coaching experience, they probably have quite a bit of coaching experience as a defensive coordinator. I want to hire a guy that has plenty of experience and can run his defense and really with the parameters of the personnel we have. I want to spend my time with the offense and do everything I can to keep those three phases working together."

Williams, 60, has a strong track record on the defensive side and will bring some fire and grit into a Jets defense that has lacked that. His first job in the NFL was as a defensive assistant with the Houston Oilers. Williams has been a defensive coordinator for the Titans, Redskins, Jaguars, Saints, Rams, and Browns. (1997-2018) Williams was also the Bills head coach from 2001-2003, going 17-31.

Many will remember Williams' time with the Saints when he was found culpable in the “Bountygate” scandal and was subsequently suspended indefinitely from the league, only to be reinstated after missing one season.

Former Broncos head coach Vance Joseph was also in the running, but he will join the Cardinals as their defensive coordinator. With the hiring of Williams, the Jets get the guy they wanted all along to take over the defense.
