Ivan Rodriguez, better known simply as “Pudge," played in the Major Leagues for 20 years as a catcher for eight different teams, including the Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins and New York Yankees.

Rodriguez joined Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts on WFAN Wednesday to discuss being inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and his experiences as a member of the 2003 World Series champion Florida Marlins.

Rodriguez was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017. He shared his reaction to being told he was headed for Cooperstown.

“It’s a dream come true to every player that plays this game for a long time, not even in baseball, in every sport, to receive a call like that, that you have been inducted into the hall of fame,“ Rodriguez said. “It was great, family was there, even my son was there and it was a great moment in my career and my life when I received that call.”

Rodriguez was a key member of the 2003 World Series champion Marlins that defeated the Yankees.

“It was all about team effort, we had a great team, great young group of guys. It was a privilege for me to work with them,” Rodriguez said. “It all started from spring training from day one, the way that we prepared ourselves to play 162 games.”

In the 2003 NLCS, Rodriguez’s Marlins were on the favorable end of the infamous Steve Bartman incident in Chicago, though Rodriguez expressed that the Bartman play was not what doomed the Cubs in that series.

“I don’t think that was the fan’s fault. To be honest with you, I think that the play after with the Gonzalez ground ball was the series for the Cubs,” Rodriguez said. “After the fly ball, which could be catchable, but that’s part of that game. He is not the only fan that does that in baseball, everybody loves baseball and wants to catch a souvenir. I think the whole series for the Cubs was the Alex Gonzalez error.”

Rodriguez was named the MVP of the 2003 NLCS with some help from the blunders of Alex Gonzalez and Steve Bartman.
