Islanders Name Anders Lee Their Captain

October 04, 2018 - 2:01 pm

The Islanders named 28-year-old left wing Anders Lee the 15th captain in team history prior to Thursday night's season opener against the Hurricanes.

How did Lee get the news? He got a call from Hall of Famer Dennis Potvin in the dressing room at PNC Arena.

Forwards Josh Bailey, Cal Clutterbuck and Andrew Ladd were selected as alternate captains.

Lee is in the final season of a four-year, $15 million deal. If Lee left after the season, that would make two straight Islanders captains leaving the franchise. John Tavares left in free agency to go to the Maple Leafs.

Head coach Barry Trotz said it became clear to him Lee was the right choice after speaking with players and watching the team in preseason.
