'Why Give Any Attention To That?'

Why are so many Yankees fans enraged about a single Hall of Famer voter not casting his or her ballot for Derek Jeter?

Listen to your team news NOW.

That was the question WFAN's Gregg Giannotti was asking at the start of Wednesday's "Boomer and Gio" show. Jeter was elected to the Hall of Fame on Tuesday, receiving 396 of 397 votes. Only one other Hall of Famer has ever been elected by unanimous vote: Mariano Rivera last year.

"Why give any attention to that?" Giannotti said. "I mean, you're really that angry about it? Like, Derek Jeter is a Hall of Famer. And if you think that it's going to change anything, that one guy with an opinion that was different from the other guys -- doesn't change his legacy one bit. Doesn't change his career. Doesn't change your memories of him. Nothing changes. It's a single guy not checking a box on a piece of paper. That's all it is."

Boomer Esiason, Giannotti's co-host, said the storyline Wednesday morning should be about Jeter's "great career and the fact that he is a first-ballot Hall of Famer and he's a no-brainer, and he actually got more votes than any other everyday player."

The question now is whether the lone dissenting voter's name will ever be revealed. If it is, Boomer predicted Yankees fans would attack him or her on social media.

"You know what the ultimate revenge would be for those who are annoyed by this guy is to totally ignore him and not care, not give him any attention, and just celebrate the fact that he's (Jeter) in," Gio said. "Make him irrelevant. That would be the ultimate revenge, not calling him a bunch of names on Twitter. What does that do?"
