Giants offensive tackle Ereck Flowers (74) prepares to block Washington Redskins linebacker Preston Smith (94) during the first half at FedEx Field.

Giants To Release Or Trade Ereck Flowers By Tuesday

The Ereck Flowers era -- or error -- is coming to an end.

The Giants will release the much-maligned offensive tackle if they are unable to trade him by 4 p.m. Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday.

Giants coach Pat Shurmur confirmed that the report is accurate.

"That situation has run its course," Shurmur told reporters.

"We appreciate Ereck Flowers' efforts with the team. ... Sometimes a change of scenery is good."

Trading Flowers figures to be unlikely because any interested team would have take on his $2.39 million guaranteed base salary, Schefter noted.

The Giants drafted Flowers with the ninth overall pick in 2015, but he struggled mightily, allowing 17 sacks in three seasons as the team's starting left tackle.

In March, new general manager Dave Gettleman signed former Patriot Nate Solder to take over at left tackle, moving Flowers to the right side. But the results weren't any better, as Flowers was benched in favor of Chad Wheeler after two games.
