Giants edge rusher Oliiver Vernon

Giants Olivier Vernon Ruled Out For Second Consecutive Week

New York Will Be Without Star Pass Rusher Against Cowboys

After opening the season with a loss at home against the Jaguars, the Giants are looking to finally get into the win column Sunday night in Dallas.

However New York is going to have to take on their division rivals without the team's star pass rusher.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur ruled Olivier Vernon out for the second consecutive week with a high ankle sprain.

Shurmur told reporters Vernon would "be out there this week" after missing last week's contest, but the talented edge rusher was not able to take part in practice on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday.

Vernon suffered the sprain during practice late last month. Despite Shurmur holding out hope that Vernon would be able to make it back in time for the season opener, calling the 27-year-old a "fast healer," the linebacker will be forced to watch from the sidelines for the second straight game.

The head coach said Vernon did not suffer any setbacks this week, and the team is hopeful they will have the 27-year-old back for next week's game in Houston.

Third round pick Lorenzo Carter and veteran Connor Barwin will once again fill in for the injured Vernon in the Giants' lineup.

Carter picked up a tackle and a pass defended in New York's loss to Jacksonville, while Barwin recorded a pass defended and one QB hit.

The Giants did receive some good news Friday on another one of the team's key defenders.

Cornerback Janoris Jenkins returned to practice Friday and will play Sunday, Shurmur told reporters.

Jenkins left Thursday's practice abruptly in tears due to a family situation, but his status for Sunday's tilt against the Cowboys is not in question.

Additionally, wide receiver Sterling Shepard practiced fully Friday and is good to go for Sunday's contest. The young receiver had been suffering from back spasms earlier in the week.

The Giants take on the Cowboys in Dallas Sunday night.
