Daniel Jones' preseason debut last week couldn't have gone any better. In his only drive under center against the Jets, he went 5-for-5 for 67 yards and tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Bennie Fowler.

But the Giants' rookie quarterback says he was just excited to be on an NFL field.

"Just to cool to run out there the first time with my teammates and get out there and play a little bit, play a little bit of football," Jones told WFAN's "Carlin, Maggie and Bart" show on Tuesday at Giants training camp in East Rutherford, New Jersey. "So that was fun. We were able to execute, move the ball down the field that drive. And really throughout the game as a team, I thought we did a good job moving the ball and (was) fun to get out there."

To observers, Jones seemed cool and collected in his first NFL action. But the first-round pick admitted he was a bit nervous.

"I try not to put too much pressure on myself, but I'd be lying if I said there weren't any nerves," he said. "I think (I was) just anxious to get out there a little bit and get in the game, live speed of the game, playing football again."

Jones isn't letting his perfect outing to go to his head. He knows he still has plenty of work to do before he takes the reins from Eli Manning, whenever that might be.

One area he's working on is his ability to read defenses quickly.

"There are so many different looks and so many different coverages and just recognizing that quickly is the challenge for me right now so I can get the ball in my hands, put the ball where it needs to go as soon as possible," he said.
