The MLB trade deadline has now come and gone, but the Mets were involved in quite a few rumors, and they made two trades a few days before the window closed.

Some of those rumors concerned the Mets and the Yankees possibly doing business with each other. On Wednesday, Van Wagenen joined Mike Francesa on WFAN, where he confirmed that he had been speaking to Yankees GM Brian Cashman quite frequently.

“Brian and I spent a lot of time on the phone over the course of the last week,” said Van Wagenen. “We had multiple conversations per-day over the course of the last 72 hours, and I don’t think either one of us would have taken the time that we did if we didn’t feel like we would’ve done a deal with each other that was a good baseball move that made sense for both of us. At the end of the day, neither one of us felt like there was a move that was the right fit for our clubs right now.”

Van Wagenen wouldn’t specify which players were mentioned in the discussions with the Yankees, but Cashman had been honest about his team’s pursuit of a starting pitcher. Noah Syndergaard was reportedly eventually taken off the block by Van Wagenen, but Zack Wheeler reportedly garnered interest from upwards of nine teams before the deadline, including the Yankees.

The Mets traded for Marcus Stroman, a player who had also been linked with the Yankees, on Sunday from the Blue Jays. After the deadline passed, a report from the New York Times’ Bob Klapisch claimed that Van Wagenen had tried to flip Stroman to the Yankees for two of the Bombers’ top prospects.

Francesa asked if the Mets had any intention of trading Stroman after only just acquiring him, as was reported, but Van Wagenen denied it.

“No, our focus really was not to grab a player and then move a player. We felt like Marcus was somebody we were going to have be a part of here. His local roots, his charisma, I think he’s a perfect fit for us.”
