Bowles: Bilal Powell's Neck Injury Not Career Ending

October 25, 2018 - 5:00 pm

Football is a game filled with injuries, but neck injuries can be particularly concerning.

On Wednesday, Todd Bowles said that it was "possible" that Bilal Powell’s neck injury could be career ending, but the Jets coach walked back those comments on Thursday. Bowles attributed the confusion to "a misunderstanding of things."

"He [Powell] does have the same thing that Quincy has," said Bowles while speaking to the press. "He will get surgery and he is expected to recover fully next year."

Powell suffered the injury, which is a bulged disc, during Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. He was tackled by Anthony Barr in the second quarter and has since been placed on season-ending IR.

The injury to Powell is another significant blow to the Jets’ season. The 30-year-old was averaging 4.3 yards-per-carry on the year after accumulating 343 yards on 80 rushes. He had also made 11 receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown.

Powell has been with the Jets since they drafted him in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. During his time with the team he has become their 10th leading rusher of all time. He is set to become a free agent after this season.

More of the load will be placed on Isaiah Crowell in Powell’s absence, and rookie back Trenton Cannon will also be called upon to pick up some of the slack.
