'Boomer And Gio': Astros Only Team That Should Scare Yankees

It’s tough to begrudge the Yankees for thinking ahead to the playoffs.

Listen to your team news NOW.

At 92-49, the Yankees have the best record in baseball. They beat up on the Texas Rangers again on Wednesday night as they continue their march to a run-away AL East title.

WFAN’s “Boomer and Gio” also did some thinking ahead to the playoffs to start their show on Thursday morning. Gregg Giannotti thinks the Astros are the only team the Yankees really need to fear in the postseason.

“They’re that good where a regular season like this makes you project all sorts of special things,” said Giannotti. “Fortunately, the only team you’re really scared about is the Houston Astros. Outside of that, I’m taking the Yankees over anybody. They’re going to beat anybody. And I’ll still take them against the Astros, but you know that that’s going to be a series.”

It’s true that the Yankees have the best record in the league, but Houston isn’t far behind. At 90-50, the Astros have the next best mark in the American League. And the Dodgers loom large at the top of the National League.

Last year, Aaron Boone’s squad fell in the playoffs to the Red Sox in the ALDS. The year before, it was the Astros who knocked Joe Girardi’s Yankees out in the ALCS, just one win away from the World Series. The two teams have split the six games they’ve contested this season, but they haven’t played each other now since the end of June.

The Yankees celebrate a win.

Boomer Esiason agreed with Giannotti about picking the Yankees over anyone, and he pointed to James Paxton’s recent resurgence as one reason why.

“Especially if Paxton is going to pitch the way he did the other night. It’s like it has gotten to a point where it is boring, but it is fun watching them hit home runs and put up numbers … the big thing now is the 25-man roster for the playoffs. That is going to be the big question mark moving forward, whether it be CC Sabathia, whether it be (Giancarlo) Stanton, whether it be (Mike) Ford.”
