The Jets offensive line is undergoing a bit of a makeover.

In 2019, the offensive line was a major weak spot for Adam Gase’s team. Sam Darnold and the other QBs were not as protected in the pocket as they should have been, which is a big reason why the Jets had such a terrible start to the season.

Joe Douglas recognized that and is now clearly trying to fix that problem, as the Jets have reportedly added Connor McGovern and George Fant to the mix. Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti praised Douglas’ efforts on their show on WFAN on Thursday morning.

“It’s obvious what Joe Douglas is doing,” said Esiason. “George Fant, Connor McGovern and Alex Lewis, all three new offensive linemen. We all kind of knew that this was going to be his forte, this is what he was trying to do. And I think he’s saving a lot of money. I think he’s getting good players.”

McGovern, who is just 26-years-old, spent the past three seasons in Denver. The former University of Missouri standout initially came into the league as a right guard, but he shifted and eventually became the Broncos' starting center.

Lewis was signed by the team in the midst of last season. He returns on a three-year deal. Fant was with the Seahawks for the first three years of his career.

Giannotti was impressed at the bargains that Douglas was getting on the market.

“He didn’t break the bank,” said Giannotti. “When I say a ‘significant amount of money’ I mean sure it still is … but he still didn’t go out there and set the market with an offensive lineman. He did not give the Nate Solder contract out to anybody because they were in desperate need.”

Esiason was particularly excited about McGovern’s addition to the team, but he still had a few concerns about Fant.

“McGovern is going to be fine. He’s going to be fine. He’s going to be the center of that offensive line. They have a legitimate top end center in the league. Now the question is, is Fant going to be a guy that’s going to be as good as he’s projected to be. This is a former basketball player that’s going to end up playing left tackle.”
